SMART Photonics is a rapidly growing, ambitious open foundry on InP Photonics. We are unique in offering our customers a Process Design Kit (PDK) which allows them to design complex photonic circuits. Our customers come from a range of market sectors, including telecom/datacom, medical sensing, automotive/Lidar and quantum technologies.

Introduction

If you are interested in defining Integrated Photonics Building Blocks (BB), then this is the role for you! As our Photonics Building Block Scientist, you will design, improve, and analyze our active building blocks to broaden the Process Development Kit (PDK) and offer our customers multiple options to finetune their chips. This work is done in close collaboration with our processing and characterization R&D engineers.

You will report directly to our Cluster Lead in the Building Block team.

As a R&D Photonics Building Block Scientist, you will be part of the Research & Development team. Within this team, you intensively collaborate with our scientists, direct R&D colleagues, product management, and other involved colleagues and departments.

Job responsibilities:

  • Develop or adapt Building Blocks and compact models to be offered in SMART Photonics PDK;
  • Understanding of our customer needs and able to translate them to useful, manufacturable, and qualitative devices;
  • Collaboration with R&D team and cross sectorial teams involved;
  • Participation in improvement projects, 8D’s and /or FMEA’s.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Integrated Photonics or a Master, with at least 2 years of industry experience;
  • Strong affinity with semiconductor laser and gain material physics and fabrication technologies;
  • Proficient in data processing, and analysis (Python or Minitab preferred);
  • Hands-on experience with quantum well modelling, such as in Harold or NextNano software packages;
  • Solid analytical and creative thinking skills;
  • Good communicator and able to get things done;
  • A natural independent drive to get things done and ownership.
